Massachusetts Hockey Mike Cheever "Grow Hockey" Grant Awarded to Malden East Boston Youth Hockey

Mayor Gary Christenson congratulated Malden East Boston (MEB) Youth Hockey League for receiving a $4,000 grant from the Massachusetts Hockey Mike Cheever “Grow Hockey” Development Program.

The purpose of the Massachusetts Hockey Mike Cheever “Grow Hockey” Development Program is to seek, fund, and share within Mass Hockey, innovative methods for growing ice hockey participation Funds received from the Cheever Grant are to be used to increase the number of new players or retain existing player.

With the Cheever Grant, MEB Youth Hockey will provide  free tuition for the first session for first 30 registered players of our learn-to-skate program to all Malden and East Boston residents – with the goal of instilling a life-long love of hockey into children that otherwise would not have access to the sport.

MEB is committed to supporting players through each development level. MEB will help educate parents on the sport, assist in finding equipment (organize program equipment swaps) and help find additional resources for skaters that need the financial support.

The MEB Learn-to-Skate Program is a joint city hockey clinic program for girls and boys ages 4 and over. The goal of the MEB Learn-to-Skate Program is to introduce the sport of hockey to children in a safe and productive environment that enables them to learn and apply the principles of teamwork, discipline, dedication, and sportsmanship.

The hockey clinic is held in two 12-week sessions each year – first session is October-December; second session is January-March. It is a basic learn-to-skate, learn-to-play hockey program with two one-hour practices a week in East Boston.  There are three levels taught; learn-to-skate, basic skills, and advanced skills. The program is run entirely by volunteers – parents, coaches and players.

The grant awarded in March 17, 2015 at the TD Garden before the Boston Bruins faced the Buffalo Sabres. On hand to present the 2015 Grant awards were Chair Ellie Cheever, Tom Songin, Mike Dargin, Kerri Allan, Bob Sweeney and other committee members
